University Orchestra to feature soloist Timothy Fain October 21

Hamilton, NY — The Â鶹¾«Æ· Orchestra, Marietta Cheng, conductor, will perform a concert titled ‘Love and Death’ on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. On the program will be three well-loved works that explore the theme of passion leading to tragedy: Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Suite from West Side Story, Richard Wagner’s Prelude to Tristan and Isolde, and Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. In addition, Mendelssohn’s lyrical Violin Concerto, Op. 64 will feature Timothy Fain as soloist. Admission is free and open to the public. Fain won the 2001 Avery Fischer Career Grant, which has launched the careers of such artists as Emanuel Ax, Ursula Oppens, Richard Goode, and Murray Perahia, and provides debuts in New York’s 92nd Street Y, Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center. Fain also won the 1999 Barenreiter Prize for the Best Historical Performance for Strings, the 1999 Mexico City Philharmonic Prize, and First Prize in the 1999 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Fain has also been invited to join the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two. The Washington Post wrote: ‘Timothy Fain has everything he needs for a spectacular career.’ A native of Santa Monica, California, Fain graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and received his masters degree from The Juilliard School, where he worked with Robert Mann of The Juilliard Quartet. In addition, he has studied with Victor Danchenko and Aaron Rosand.
